The Repair of Canine Elbow Dysplasia
Elbow Dysplasia is a congenital defect of the front leg in dogs,
a problem that a dog is born with. It can be found in any breed
but is most commonly seen in the large to giant breeds such as Chows,
Rottweillers, Shar Peis, Bernese Mountain dogs, and Golden Retrievers.
Elbow dysplasia is a problem of the front leg that a dog is born
with.
Though the problem is one that the pet is born with, it is not
until wear and tear of the joint and degenerative changes cause
lameness that treatment is sought. In a perfect world, all young
dogs would have screening x-rays taken of their hips and elbows
before they are one year of age. Even if a pet seems to have no
outward signs of lameness, it is recommended to have these early
pictures taken to help rule in or out underlying problems. Early
surgical intervention can help to slow down the inevitable damage
to the joint.
Until recently, there was no cure for the osteoarthritis that
elbow dysplasia causes. The main stay of treatment is appropriate
exercise, weight control, and anti-inflammatory medications. Ground
breaking research is underway at the University of California at
Davis. Dr. P.R. Volliet is investigating the use of stem cells injected
in to the affected joint. These primordial cells cause the regeneration
of some of the components of the cartilage that normally covers
the bones. The dysplasia causes the bones to line up improperly
and this leads to secondary joint damage. The stem cells, by producing
new cartilage factors, aid in self-repair. How long will it take
a dog to experience relief? Only 3 to 6 months!

How can you protect your dog from this potentially crippling disease?
When possible, check the parents of your new pup for this congenital
defect. Feed large breed puppies, diets specifically formulated
for them. If your pet is at risk, screening x-rays are recommended.
