Personality Profiling

Any breed, and any size dog can be aggressive, but it is typically the larger, more powerful dogs that cause the greatest damage. Topping the list of dogs that are involved in reported dog bites are German Shepherds, Staffordshire and Pit Bull Terriers, Doberman Pinchers, and Rottweillers.

Recently several major insurance companies are either raising their premiums for owners of breeds that are considered aggressive, or even canceling policies. The number one reason why claims are made against a homeowner’s policy is dog bites. According to the Insurance Information Institute, $310 million was paid out last year on such claims. It is not that the total number of bites is on the increase, but rather the cost of each claim has skyrocketed. The age group that sustains the greatest number of bites is the 5 to 9 year olds. More boys than girls fall victim.

What can you do to maintain your policy and more importantly protect your family? Early socialization of all dogs is extremely important. Everyone should teach their dog basic manners. And just because you have owned dogs for years, doesn’t mean that you can’t teach an old dog owner a new trick or two at an obedience class.

If your pet suddenly becomes aggressive, it may be experiencing a medical problem. See your veterinarian for a complete check up. And don’t laugh. You may need the services of a pet behaviorist to help make your dog a doll rather than a devil.
