Doctor Visit Jitters
You know exactly how your pet feels when it's time t visit the
doctor. Your paws get sweaty, your heart starts to race, and you
would like to bite the nurse. But you don't. Youre a human
and that just wouldnt be politically correct. Your cat or
dog however is not under the same social restraints. There are steps
that you can take to make future trips less trying.
Don't make each encounter with the veterinarian a painful one.
Try having some fun visits. Stop by the office for a weight check
or just to say hello. Bring along some special treats to reward
your pet for good behavior.
Dont make each encounter with the veterinarian a painful
one.
Have you ever noticed that when your veterinarian enters the exam
room in which you and your pet is waiting, that your dog growls
and carries on like it was a ferocious guard dog? Pets tend to be
very protective of their owners and surroundings Try turning the
tables. Ask the receptionist to seat you in the exam room after
the doctor has gone in. Then your pet is entering the doctor's territory
and not the other way around.
If fun trips and role reversals are not working, you may need
to ask your veterinarian for some tranquilizers. If you suspect
that your canine may be a fear biter, purchase a sturdy muzzle.
A good dog won't mind and a nervous one needs one. Your pet may
be a dear at home but safety should be your first concern. Be sure
to always have your dog on a leash and your cat in a sturdy carrier
where ever you travel.
