Heart Felt Advances
Pets win us over heart and soul from the moment
they enter our lives. But there are times when their hearts are
in need of assistance. Pets, like people can be born with congenital
cardiac defects that can dramatically shorten their lifespan. One
such condition is aortic stenosis, an abnormal narrowing of the
major outflow tract from the heart to the body. This condition can
result in the sudden death of the pet, usually before they reach
three years of age. Until recently, there was no successful medical
or surgical treatment.
Pets can be born with congenital cardiac defects that can dramatically
shorten their life spans.
Texas, A&M University in a cooperative effort involving MDs
and veterinarians recently performed the first successful heart
bypass surgery on a young Labrador retriever that was desperately
in need of help. Luke had little time left when the team of surgeons
undertook the 92-minute procedure. The surgery was a success. Though
sub-aortic stenos is a fairly common malady in large breed dogs,
it is unlikely that this surgery will become commonplace. The complication
rate is high but the $7,000 price tag may be the deciding factor.
Im happy to report that Luke is doing well after his surgery.
If your pet has won your heart, be sure that your veterinarian periodically
takes a listen to its ticker. Why? Because it is "Your Pet..Health
Matters.
