Do Pets Feel Sorrow?

Whether pets feel sorrow at the passing of an animal housemate is impossible to say. There are many stories, some that I have witnessed myself, of pets apparently mourning the loss of another.

Our pets are creatures of habit. They like their routines. It gives them a sense of security. When another pet suddenly is missing, you may notice your cat or dog searching for the other. It is not uncommon for a pet to refuse to eat, have changes in its sleeping habits or seem lethargic and withdrawn.

Pets apparently mourn that loss of another.

A study was performed at a zoo that needed to euthanize one of their elephants. It was the lead elephant of a small herd of 4. The alpha animal was secluded from the others and the procedure performed. Then the three were allowed access to the body. The keepers described what followed as being very touching and emotional. The other pachyderms entered the room with trunks and ears held low. They very gently sniffed the body and cautiously walked all around it. They stayed for an extended period of time despite being offered some of their favorite treats as enticement to leave.

Several veterinary animal behaviorists recommend the following to assist in closure for your own surviving pet. Discuss with your veterinarian before the scheduled euthanasia your desire to have your surviving pet view the deceased body. Don’t have your pet present during the actual procedure. Allow the pet to interact freely and spend as much time as they desire. Some pets may show an apparent lack of interest and other may react more strongly. Are these pets reacting to our emotions or do they genuinely feel sad? Mental and physical well being can be difficult to measure but do what you feel is best because it is “Your Pet…Health Matters.”
