Feline Lap Lounging, Why is It Always Yours?

You don’t hate cats, but you would prefer they seek out someone else’s lap to curl up in. So why is it that whenever you go to some feline fanciers home, though there may be a plethora of laps that would love to be blessed with a frosting of cat fur, these slinky devils always choose your lap?

Put yourself in the cats’ place. Better yet, pretend you are a rock star. You have just entered a concert hall. All of your fans are there trying to get a closer look at you. They all want to touch you. They are madly waving their arms in the air trying to get your attention. Well, that is how a cat feels when it enters a room full of alurophils. The experience can be a bit daunting. Then amongst all this chaos, the kitty spies a quiet refuge, you. You are just sitting there. Not making eye contact. Hoping it doesn’t see you. Bingo, the perfect place to escape.

If you want to learn more about your pet’s nonverbal communications, there are several books on the subject.

Pets in general are very good at reading our body language. Sometimes the true intentions are lost in the translation of human to pet language. Licking your lips incessantly may be a person’s nervous tick. To a dog, it is a sign of non-aggression. Flashing a toothy smile is an act of friendship. When a dog bares its teeth, a bite may be on its mind. Holding eye contact with another person can be a way of showing interest in the other. To a pet, staring is very intimidating.

If you want to learn more about your pet’s nonverbal means of communications, there are several books on the subject. The more we know about our pet’s mind and body, the better equipped we will be to insure their mental and physical well being, and that is important because it is “Your Pet…Health Matters.”
