Summer Time Hot Dogs
Summer is a great time to enjoy family outings, especially if
they include your dog. But you need to be aware of your pet's special
needs.
Dogs have a very limited number of sweat glands. They regulate
their body temperature mainly by panting and seeking out cool, shady
escapes from the sun. But if you are spending the day at the park,
or just hanging out in your backyard, your dog may over heat by
playing too hard. Watch for excessive panting, very red gums, or
a very pooped pooch. If you see any of these signs, stop, find shade,
offer some water and seek veterinary assistance if your dog does
not return to normal in a few minutes.
The incidence of skin cancer from sun exposure is on the rise
for humans and pets. If your dog has a very light coat, short hair
or a lack of pigment on its nose, avoid extended time in the sun.
Apply sunscreen to the ear and nose.
A 1998 Gallop Poll survey of dog owners found that dogs are one
of our most popular exercise partners. It is best to restrict your
outdoor physical activities to the cooler hours. Beware of days
with excessive humidity. At these times, even a minimal amount of
exercise can become very strenuous.
Going to a fireworks display? I advise that you leave your dog
at home. All the people, noise, and excitement may be too much for
your dog to handle. It could get scare and run off or accidentally
nip at someone.
Car trips are a staple of summer. Being locked car, even with
the windows down can turn in to a hot oven in a few minutes. Leave
your dog at home whenever possible. If your dog must travel with
you, have water available, park in the shade, carry a leash, secure
your dog in the back seat with a safety harness, and be sure that
your pet wears identification at all times.
Summer is a time for fun. With some pre-planning, your dog can
safely enjoy the season with you, and this is important because
it is "Your Pet
Health Matters."
