Cloning Endangered Species
The list of endangered species is growing at an alarming rate.
The demise of many of these animals is due in part to the ever-expanding
human population encroaching on their habitat. Also their numbers
are also being decimated because of the mistaken belief that the
eating of various body parts will endow the person eating them with
the strength of the animal. Sports' hunting has also reduced their
numbers.
Recently Advanced Cell Technology of Mass. was able to successfully
clone an endangered Asian Guar that they named Noah. Great excitement
was caused by the birth of this healthy animal. Alas, 48 hours later,
due to complications not uncommon even with domestic cattle, Noah
died.
This was the first reported birth of an endangered species using
a domestic animal as the mother. It is hoped that more of these
creatures that might perish from the face of the earth may be saved
and reintroduced into the wild by the process of cloning.
Cloning is not the cure for our improper use of our animal and
worldly resources, but it may help reverse some of our shortcomings.
