...What we can easily see is only a small percentage of what is possible

Feline Field Trips.

Many of our feline friends are totally indoor pets. Studies have shown that cats that live solely inside live longer, healthier lives. But, these cats are also more prone to becoming overweight due to a lack of exercise. Options for trying to keep your kitty fit have been very limited.

Walking is a fantastic physical activity for our pets, and us, yes, even for cats. Popping a leash on your dog and going for a stroll is pretty straight forward, but getting a cat used to venturing outdoors takes more preparation and patience. If you have ever tried to hold a cat that wanted out of your arms you know they can turn in to noodles that easily escape your grasp.

Cats need the restraint of a harness to avoid them getting away. Don't try to go for a walk the first time you put one on your cat. The kitty will either stand absolutely still and refuses to move or start to walk like a flattened crab. You may want to have your veterinarian help you adjust the fit. It has to be amazingly snug to prevent this Houdini from wiggling free.

Start by walking your cat around the house. Praise the cat for even taking a few steps then remove the contraption. Coax kitty with its favorite treat. Make your training sessions short and frequent. Once your furry friend is accustomed to its new clothing, try venturing in to your backyard. Your cat is experiencing many new sights, smells and sensations. It will not initially walk but rather sniff, crouch, and cry to go inside. Again, patience is the key. Keep taking your tabby outside and soon you will find that it may actually start to walk along side you. On your first few trips around the neighborhood, you may want to bring along the cat's carrier in case it gets really scared. You can then pop it in to the carrier and easily return home. Try to make your outdoor adventures limited to times of the day when it is relatively quiet.

You will never be able to go for a jog with your cat. It may even take you a half hour to go to the end of the block, but this should be a time of mental stimulation for your cat and bonding between the two of you.

Our pets give us so much unconditional love. We need to give them a balance diet, exercise, mental stimulation and love. And this is important because it is "Your Pet…Health Matters."
