On Line Pets, You May Get Caught in a Web of Deception.
The Internet is a fantastic way to buy everything from groceries
to books. The Humane Society of the United States warns the American
consumer to avoid the trend of purchasing on line, at least when
it comes to pets. Nothing can compare to actually seeing, touching
and playing with your prospective new best friend. All the cute
pictures and glowing stories of what wonderful puppies or kittens
the breeder has to offer and what champion lines the youngster comes
from, can't take the place of meeting the litter and determining
for yourself which fur ball will best fit in to your household.
Some breeds of cats and dogs seem to be more common in one part
of the United States than another. You might be tempted to go online
and purchase a pet from someone who lives thousands of miles away
from you because you are having difficulty locating a local breeder.
You should be warned, that transporting pets, especially very young
ones might have fatal consequences. Though the online breeder may
say that the pet is raised in a loving and home-like environment,
it may actually have been born at a puppy or kitten mill.
Pets are often purchased with a money back guarantee, but if the
breeder is on the other coast, and the only way you can get your
money back is to return the ill pet, it may not be feasible. Whenever
possible, use the services of a breeder that is at least driving
distance from your home. Ask for references from others who have
done business with them. Better yet, go to a local shelter or rescue
society and take home a pet that desperately needs a home.
No matter where you find you new addition to the family, have
your new pet examined by a veterinarian to be sure that it is in
tiptop condition. And this is important because it is "Your
Pet
Health Matters."
