Litter Box Basics
Or How to Keep Your Cat in the Box.
With the variety of cat boxes, and litter types, a cat owner might
think that it would be impossible to find the right combination
to keep their cat using their box and not the corner of the living
room for its elimination. In a recent issue of "Cat Fancy"
they listed the top ten reason why your feline may fail "potty
etiquette 101" and some simple fixes.
A cat that is suffering from a myriad of medical problems may
have uncontrollable urges and can't make it to the box in time.
An arthritic cat may have difficulty getting in to a high-sided
box. Before you boot your kitty outside, take it to the veterinarian
for a thorough examination.
Would you want to use a potty in the middle of a freeway? Well,
your cat feels the same way. A quiet and private area is typically
favored.
Cats truly are very fastidious creatures. Cleaning the box daily,
yes, daily is recommended. If you have more than one cat, and only
one box, you may need to scoop more often.
Cats also have a preference for litter; one just feels better
on their paws. If you recently changed the type of litter, or even
the scent, you could be the cause of your cat avoiding the box.
So if you find one your cat likes, don't change.
No cat box can be large enough. If you have ever observed your
cat scratching around in its box, you might suspect it is trying
to find a way to tunnel out of the house.
You live in a home with only one bathroom and have many family
members; access to this very essential room can be at a premium.
Most animal behaviorist will recommend at least one cat box per
cat. Who really wants to share this most private of locales or be
rushed?
Rearranging the furniture in the living room may be fine for you,
but try not to relocate your cats box too often. They are creatures
of habit.
If you have more than one cat, you may have noticed that one is
more dominate than the other. The timid one may feel bullied away
from the box. Another reason to have multiple boxes.
If your cat does have an accident, punishing your kitty will not
help. Positive reinforcement, and lots on patience is needed.
If your cat has botched box behavior, see your veterinarian, because
it is
