Finally, a 911 for Pets!
Pets are very curious about their environment, and may often get
exposed to toxins around the house. There are many household products
such as cleaning solvents, plants, and garden supplies that could
cause injury. Sometimes the pet owner, with all the best of intentions
will administer a medication given to them by their physician for
what seems like a similar problem or by their veterinarian for another
pet. This can result in adverse reactions and even death.
In the past, the pet owner had no where to turn if they suspected
a poisoning other than their veterinarian, who might not be available
in the middle of the night or weekends. Now, there is a poison control
hot line dedicated only to animals, and it is available 24 hours
a day, 365 days a year. The North Shore Animal League of America
sponsors the Animal Poison Hotline. It is staffed by veterinary
professionals, toxicologists and pharmacologists. With a state of
the art on line data base for more that 150 manufacturers of household
and agricultural products, plus potentially dangerous plants, they
can advise a worried pet owner. They will even contact the pet's
regular veterinarian with a summary.
How best to avoid a pet becoming poisoned? Just as it's necessary
to child proof a home, it is just as important to pet proof. Keep
all potentially toxic substances away from pet's curious paws, and
mouths. Research what plants you may have in the house or yard that
may be poisonous. Never give medications unless it has been prescribed
for that particular pet.
To contact the Animal Poison Hotline call 888-232-8870. There
is a $35 consultation fee, but that is a small investment, because
it is "Your Pet
Health Matters."
