Are You Ready for the Sound of Little Feet Around Your House?

Adopting a pet always seem like a marvelous idea until the realization that there is so much more to caring for a pet. Some of the most common reasons why pets are relinquished to a shelter are: it costs too much, or it took more time and was more of a hassle than expected. Answer the following questions honestly and see if you are really ready. Remember, when you adopt a pet it's for life…. their life.

Can you afford a new member to your family? Though the pet may be free, pets require more than just food and water. Pet health insurance can help defray medical expenses but be sure to budget a pet into your financial plans.

Does everyone in the family want a pet? Though you may have always wanted a snake or lizard, that doesn't mean everyone in the family is keen on the idea. A pet must be a welcome addition.

Pet care is daily care. Who is going to scoop the cat box or do poop patrol in the backyard? Even the simple act of feeding the pet can be an additional time commitment that you just can't handle. However much time you think your pet is going to require, at least double that.

Ready to go back to school? Even though you may have cared for cats, dogs, birds, fish or reptiles before, advances in pet health care and nutrition has changed so dramatically over the past several years, that you need to update your knowledge. With the Internet and new books available, it is not hard to do. But it does require time and the desire to stay abreast of new information.

So now that some of the glamour has been taken out of the adoption process, if you still think that the patter of little feet around the house is for you, research your choices, take some time, prepare the house for the homecoming, and enjoy.
