Toxic Shock Syndrome is on the Rise Again...this time in dogs.

The use of internal feminine hygiene products was associated with Toxic Shock Syndrome that affected women in alarming numbers a decade ago. The newest cases have been seen in male and female Greyhound dogs.

A canine health advisory has been issued by Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine. The streptococcal toxic syndrome can cause death within eight hours if not treated promptly. Symptoms can be vague: depression, weakness, muscle spasms, and rigidity, accompanied with a high fever of 104 to 107. A dog's normal temperature is 101 to 102.5.

Early treatment with antibiotics is the key. How do you know if your pet is affected? When in doubt, see your veterinarian because it is "Your Pet...Health Matters."
