Keeping Your Children and Pets Safe:
Mom was right, you should wash your hands after
playing with the dog!
If she said it once, she said it one hundred
times, wash your hands when done playing
with that pet. Mom really did know best. The Center for
Disease Control estimates the at least 10,000 new cases of Toxocara
canis
occurs in children every year. Children can ingest the infective
organism
from contaminated soil and other objects such as feces stained toys.
The movement of the organism in the human body can lead to eye or
generalized body wide infections. Most cases are very mild but the
possibility for more serious problems exists.
To prevent the potential spread of this disease it is recommended
that all pups should be dewormed by their veterinarian . Parents
should instruct their children regarding good hygiene and pet owners
need to pick up after their dogs in public areas.
